Kathleya Afanador received her formal training as a figure skater, a martial artist and, a bit later on, as a dancer in both Cunningham and Release based techniques. She graduated summa cum laude from Cornell University majoring in Auditory and Visual Cognition and in Dance, with a concentration in Computing in the Arts. She holds a master's degree in choreography from Trinity Laban Conservatoire.

Afanador's choreography has been presented in in various cities across the United States as well as internationally in Italy and the UK. She has presented research on cross-modal perception at the Congress on Research in Dance (CORD) Conference and the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC). During 2006-2007 she held a NSF IGERT fellowship at Arizona State University's Arts, Media, and Engineering Program. Additionally, she is a contributing editor (dance) for Arts America.
